Gas pump needs a zip code; Canadians not welcome To be fair, there are some stations in Toronto that don't accept non-Canadian cards. I've seen signs at some noting this, though I've never tried using my US card at one to see what happens. Click to Play!

I find that almost all US gas pumps allow Canadian cards to punch in the 3 numbers of the Cdn. code (in order), followed by 00 (zero zero). This has worked for me 99% of the time at US pumps. Perhaps the same will work for UK credit cards. Click to Play!

I travel a lot in the US especially when I wish to add to my stock video footage library I sell on Pond5.com. One of the most frustrating things I found was using self-service gas bars and not being able to use my Canadian credit card at the pump because most of the pumps ask for a Zip Code for authorization. Five zeros won't work -- the reason they ask for your zip code is to (slightly) reduce credit-card fraud. You're asked for the billing zip code of the card, and if it doesn't match the zip code that the computer system has on file, your card will be rejected and you'll have to go inside anyway. Finally! Canadians able to pay at U.S. pumps with credit again - The Globe and Mail Using canadian credit card in usa zip code

During the past eight years while driving in the USA, we have identified and tested several "work-arounds" for Canadian Snowbirds who are unable to purchase gas with a Canadian credit card at U.S. gas pumps, due to a lack of a valid zip code. Here are some to consider.
In the past I have always been annoyed when using a credit card at the pump when buying gas in the US. Invariably the message requires you to enter a zip code and it has to be the address where the credit card is billed and it will not accept the address where you are, or will be staying in the US.
Debit cards can be weird in the US. I travel to the US frequently and always use my credit card without issues. I also carry about $100 USD for things like coffee shops and other places I don't want to bother with a CC.

A number of southeastern US gas stations will not accept non-USA credit cards (i.e., Visa and Mastercards issued in other countries) for gas purchases at their gas pumps . . . . . . if you do not have a US credit card billing address with a 5 digit US zip code - you cannot start pumping.
travel tip: u.s. gas pump code Now you can use your Canadian Mastercard ® to pay at the pump when you fill up in the U.S. Most U.S. gas stations require a ZIP code when paying at the pump with a credit card.

using canadian credit card in usa zip code Travel Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for road warriors and seasoned travelers.
Join them; it only takes a minute: In the USA, many fuel dispensers that accept credit cards require a that corresponds to the billing address of the credit card.
In Canada, for instance, we haveso it's not obvious what you're supposed to type in since the gas dispensers have only numeric keypads.
Entering '00000' or '90210' seems to always result in failed authorization.
Is there a zip code that works for credit cards with foreign billing addresses?
Would you consider broadening the question to 'foreign credit card'?
I think that would make it more useful to others.
Both cash and foreign cards are useless in that situation.
So, if your Canadian billing address is right beside where the postal code is H2W 1L2, you would enter '21200'.
Where the '212' are the numbers from the postal code, and the '00' is padding to get to 5 digits.
Interestingly, if your billing address is in where the postal code is T0L 0Z0, you actually would enter '00000'.
Edit: I just tested this on January 23rd, 2014.
While Head-Smashed-in-Buffalo Jump is one of the more colourful place names in Canada, the 0s are easy to find.
Small rural places that all share the same postal code have them to allow expansion later.
Eg, if your billing address is "42 Anystreet Ln", your address is only verified as "42".
Sometimes no ZIP code is asked for and it works fine.
Also, sometimes entering 00000 does work I'm guessing because it's not subsequently using the ZIP code entered.
In my experiences with using a UK card in the states, 00000 doesn't work, and the staff in the gas station are able to handle the exception, but I wouldn't say "well equipped to handle".
So for example, if your postcode is SW 1A 2AA, your "zipcode" would be 12000.
As it happens I have a US credit and debit cards, but have yet to memorise the zip code associated with those cards, I therefore have to remember to use the Debit card and its PIN.
Have yet to try my UK Debit card.
Since we also have 5 digits ZIP codes, the match should be fairly click the following article />However, on some occasions it worked perfectly, while on others it didn't and I had to see the cashier.
All in all, there doesn't seem to be any kind of rule or system - at least not to me.
The smart ones notice it's a foreign card and just ignore the number, stupid ones assume all numbers are US numbers and can't match the resulting US zip to the card doh!
On my first encounters with a US pump I tried my hotel's ZIP code, because I didn't using canadian credit card in usa zip code that the ZIP code is used to validate the card and not for market research.
Only when I started entering my home's ZIP code it worked almost every time.
The success rate also seems to depend on the card itself.
In my experience, American Express causes the least amount of trouble in the US.
It's almost always accepted, even in vending machines.
You can type in your Swedish zipcode also 5 digit but I honestly doubt the system checks for foreign cards.
I have UK and Italian credit cards.
Italy also has 5 digit postal codes and I've sometimes been able to use the postal code at the pump with an Italian card.
I've also called my credit card company and asked if I could put a temporary address on a credit card so using canadian credit card in usa zip code I could have a zip code associated.
In the end I decided not to do that, but might be worth asking if your credit card company can do it.
Perhaps just put the address of the hotel you're staying at.
As other people have said, I've also had luck using just the digits of my UK postal code padded with zeroes.
I've never been able to use all zeroes.
The mechanism that the gas station uses, is the credit card.
It's worth noting that there seem to be restrictions on this in various US states as noted in this : There are some controversies and legal issues when requesting AVS information.
For example, in California and Massachusetts it slot used be illegal to ask for ZIP code information, as this is seen as a privacy violation.
This may explain why all zeroes are accepted in some places and not others.
AVS works differently with different card suppliers, so it may be possible that a Mastercard works with a foreign 5 digit postal code, or zero-padded postal code, whereas an Amex doesn't, or vice versa.
Australian credit cards Australian credit cards don't seem to cause much of a problem here - I was able to use 90210 which is always my go-to American zip code, probably like many!
This was with an Australian Mastercard.
At a Long Island Railroad ticket machine in New York City, the code was asked.
I accidentally tapped the "Continue" button on the touchscreen witout typing any code, and it worked.
FYI The zip codes in Switzerland have 4 digits.

Trying to use my Canadian credit card (and billing address) but most US websites will only give me the option to enter a US billing address. I want to ship it to my MyUSAaddress.com US address. I called my credit card company and added a US shipping address but still has a Canadian billing address.
